Essar Steel and Sault Ste. Marie heading back to court over unpaid taxes

Essar Steel is causing a lot of grief for City Hall in Sault Ste. Marie. The steelmaker hasn’t paid the city $1.8 million in taxes as part of first installment for this year. Essar was under a court order to pay the tax and now city council is going back to court to get its money.

Compounding matters is Essar also didn’t pay a second installment last week, but council is taking a wait and see approach on this bill. The city’s mayor says it’s disappointing that Essar isn’t paying its taxes.

The company is re-structuring itself as it copes with massive debt.
