Today, April 28, is the International Day of Mourning for workers killed on the job or from occupational disease.
Janice Martell, the founder of the McIntyre Powder Project, will be a speaker at Elliot Lake’s memorial today.
She says there are similar gatherings happening in communities around the world, including Northern Ontario mining communities like Timmins (10:30 AM at the Porcupine Miners’ Memorial), and Sudbury (9:30 AM Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium).
She adds 12 new names of Elliot Lake miners who died of occupational disease will be added to the memorial wall stressing all 12 are McIntyre Powder-exposed miners
Martel says it is important to mark the ceremony for families, some of whom fought for 12 years or more to get WSIB to recognize their claims.
All Day of Morning events are free and open to the public.
