Third annual Rare Disease Skate-a-Thon raises thousands for research

The Third Annual I Am Rare & Aware Skate-a-Thon has raised thousands of dollars once again for research into rare children’s diseases.
Alex and Kelsey McKechnie organized the annual event with the assistance of the Espanola Lions Club, Espanola Firefighters, businesses such as FreshCo and Home Hardware, and numerous volunteers.
Kelsey says they more than exceeded their goal of $25,000 and the Lions raised more through raffle and food sales in support of the initiative, with plans for a cheque presentation soon.
The McKechnie family extend a huge thank you to supporters with 100% of the proceeds going to research at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Their daughter Iris Mae was diagnosed with Pompe disease following her birth nearly four years ago and undertakes weekly infusions at Health Sciences North to maintain her health.
