Elliot Lake Minor Hockey voices their concerns to council

The hockey community in Elliot Lake is worried about the negative effect the lack of an arena has caused.
The Elliot Lake Vikings took a leave of absence upon learning the Rogers Arena would not likely reopen until late this year, if the remedial work can be even carried out.
The council chamber was packed with minor hockey families and supporters on Monday outlining the difficulties their league is facing, and in support of Lara Hukezalie, the acting president of Elliot Lake Minor Hockey.
She says travel expenses for the trips to Massey for ice time are creating financial hardships, increased travel time and sometimes dealing with hazardous driving conditions.
She says the negative impact is starting to outweigh the positives, for most of their members.
Hukezalie asked council to consider an advisory committee to assist the league while the repairs continue.
Mayor Andrew Wannan says the arena will not open until it is safe, adding the timeline is out of their hands, but also stressed leadership has never wavered in pushing forward with the work needed.
He says the city does not have the money to move to another site, let alone an alternative location, but understands the frustration the ongoing challenges the repair has caused.
Hukezalie also asked council to travel to Massey to see what minor hockey is doing, which council will consider, as well as the request to form an advisory committee.
