Fighting an invasive plant on Manitoulin Island is entering its 10th year.
The effort is manned by volunteers and overseen by coordinator Judith Jones.
She says Invasive Phragmites is a very tall grass that has been spreading aggressively on shorelines and in wetlands on the Island.
She says they grow into dense patches that can wipe out all other vegetation and seriously threaten wildlife and fish habitat, recreation, tourism, property values, and aesthetics.
She says there were several cleanups in 2024 including controlling a large patch in Sheguiandah Bay, continuing the work on the north side of Lake Wolsey and clearing another patch at Little Thomas Bay in Wiikwemkoong.
Jones adds they will follow up this year at several sites in South Bay, north of Wiikwemkoong and Assiginack.
