Potential rock quarry rezoning going before tribunal

Public input is now being sought following the rezoning of some Crown Land near Lake Lauzon (LOW-zon) in the Township of the North Shore for a potential quarry.

Township council voted to rezone the land from restricted open space to mineral extraction for Darien Aggregates Incorporated to operate a trap rock quarry.

However, North Shore Environmental Resource Advocates Incorporated has decided to enter the fray challenging the rezoning with the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal.

Spokesperson Rhonda Kirby says anyone can take part in the appeal but must file with the Ontario Land Tribunal for participant status.

She says all that is needed is a letter outlining concerns individuals may have about the rezoning, and will not have to testify to take part.

Kirby says the key concerns are the potential effects on local and Lake Huron water quality and the habitat of the federally endangered Blanding’s Turtle.

The deadline is July 3rd with a case management conference set for July 13th.

As of June 1, 2021, the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal, Environmental Review Tribunal, Board of Negotiation, Conservation Review Board and the Mining and Lands Tribunal were merged into a new single tribunal called the “Ontario Land Tribunal”. Note that new forms are available on our “Forms” page.

Click on “Forms” at the top of the page. Kirby says participants can disregard the Representative Contact section of the form if they are submitting it as an individual.

The deadline for submissions is July 3, 2021.
