The Day of Mourning was a quiet affair in Elliot Lake this year.
Mayor Dan Marchisella and Councillor Ed Pearce laid a wreath at the Miner’s Memorial yesterday to acknowledge those who died or suffered injuries in the workplace.
Marchisella says despite COVID-19, as a municipality, everyone still strives to ensure safer workplaces for all and to recognize the loss of life and workplace illness.
He says the city also lowered the flags for the day.
Meanwhile, in Espanola, a small group of Domtar staff gathered to lay wreaths yesterday morning.
Company human resources manager Teresa Miller says there was a smaller group than usual due to COVID-19 restrictions, but it’s hoped that the annual observance of this day will help strengthen the resolve to establish safe and healthy conditions in the workplace.
