Eliminating plastics and single-use plastics is behind a multi-million dollar investment by the federal Liberals in Espanola’s Domtar Mill.
Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Rural Economic Development announced the government will invest $28.2-million into the Espanola mill.
The money will go to support Domtar’s $67.5-million retro-fit towards new equipment and processes to produce new papers that will eventually eliminate some plastic uses.
Domtar’s project will involve commercializing its new Stealth Fiber Technology, which will produce stronger paper and allow for the production of innovative products.
Serre says the retrofit will also reduce greenhouse gases and improve air quality by some 48,000 tonnes annually at the Espanola operation.
He adds the project also maintains all 430 jobs at the mill.
The announcement was made in front of almost 200 mill employees Tuesday afternoon.
