Isadore Day says true reconciliation includes a fair and expedited settlement to the Sixties Scoop class action lawsuit.
The Ontario Regional Chief says it’s a positive sign the federal government is willing to negotiate an end to the $1.3 billion claim. However Day says they must acknowledge to the survivors and to Canada that they have a duty to protect the cultural identity of Indigenous children.
The Sixties Scoop saw thousands of Indigenous children taken from their families and placed in non-Indigenous homes. Day says the damage done by the Sixties Scoop is still felt to this day.
