The provincial member in Algoma Manitoulin is accusing the Premier of ignoring the steel industry’s cries for help. Mike Mantha took Kathleen Wynne to task because she’s not helping Essar Steel in Sault Ste. Marie cope with a poor steel market. And Mantha issued a challenge to Wynne, asking if she is prepared to have meetings. He says she should meet with local municipal leaders, unions, pensioners, creditors, and potential buyers, to tell them the province values steel manufacturing and sees a future for it.
In response Wynne says it’s going to take a joint effort to resolve the industry’s challenges and she criticized Mantha for his negative talk. She says they recognize there may be a solution in working with the federal government. But, she says one thing that won’t work, is talking down the steel industry in Ontario.
The steel industry has been coping with depressed prices and one reason is because some countries have been dumping steel at reduced prices.
