A Manitoulin Island town council has approved a tender for a major downtown revitalization project.
Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane says council has awarded the tender for the project to MCA Contracting Ltd., for a total of $2,390,919.41.
He says the project is a game-changer for Gore Bay in making the downtown a more accessible, attractive, and economically thriving space.
Lane says the project will include key upgrades such as improved streetscapes, accessible curbs, tree planting and lighting, as well as enhancing the connection between the downtown core and the marina.
He adds the revitalization is an essential part of Gore Bay’s long-term strategy to attract new residents, support local businesses and foster economic growth
The funding is coming from donations, a grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, and reserves.
If there is any surplus, Lane says it will go toward further marina and investment income.
He adds the work is to begin in May with a completion date of October.
