Rise in drug poisonings in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is warning of a rise in drug poisonings and unexpected reactions to substances in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts.
According to the release, the cause of the increase is unknown, but the agency says it as an important reminder that street drugs may be cut or mixed with substances that can cause overdoses (such as benzos (benzodiazepines), xylazine, medetomidine, fentanyl, or carfentanil.)
The agency says frontline workers are reporting that multiple doses of naloxone have been required to reverse poisonings with long periods of heavy sedation and unconsciousness.
Free naloxone kits are available at health agencies throughout the districts including pharmacies and health centres.
