Beaver Lake fire station in danger of being shut down

The Beaver Lake Fire Station is in danger of being shut down by the City of Greater Sudbury.

Brenda Salo, a member of the Beaver Lake Fire and Services Committee says the city has received a recommendation from a recent fire report recommending their fire station be closed and amalgamated with Whitefish Fire Department.

She says if they lose their fire department, it will affect their fire insurance because 90 percent of the community will be outside the required 13-kilometre zone for fire protection.

She adds that could have a devastating effect on their property values.

She adds even with amalgamating the two stations, there are still not enough volunteer firefighters for a full complement required to cover the entire area.

Salo says public meetings are slated for tomorrow evening, and next Wednesday, at 6 pm at the Beaver Lake Sports & Cultural Club.

She says there is also a petition that can be signed at the local post office.

The City of Greater Sudbury has yet to respond to our inquiries.
