Three chiefs of three local first nations have put together a shared approach to investigating the Spanish Residential School grounds for possible unmarked graves.
Chiefs Alan Ozawanimke of Sagamok Anishnawbek, Brent Bissaillion of Serpent River First Nation and Reg Niganobe of Mississauga First Nation held the discussion around a sacred fire set up on the grounds of the former Residential School overlooking the mouth of the Spanish River
They note if any children are found in unmarked graves, they may be from either Sagamok, Serpent River or Mississauga First Nation or other communities from across Ontario and Quebec.
Gimaa Ozawanimke says that Sagamok Anishnawbek has already committed to the purchase of ground-penetrating radar apparatus to be employed in the site investigation.
The chiefs are hoping to see the work begin soon.
